Gender Issues

Gender roles have been present in all of human history. This video shows that children have some knowledge of gender roles. (Don't know the details of this experiment so I can't confirm validity.) But we can see that in the past, there weren't many male nurses. There weren't many girls that were interested in football. If someone moved away from the gender norm, it was like breaking a law. To see things like this now isn't shocking. Do you think the continued existence of the Miss America Pageant or the Mr. Universe bodybuilding contest still influence people's ideas of gender? What are the sources of our gender identity and behaviors?

  1. Yes I do agree that there are some gender roles in society, but that doesn't mean a man can't be a nurse. In general, the husband goes to work, while the wife stays home. But there are plenty of stay at home dads, I now a dad that stays home all day while his wife goes to work.(she is a news reporter) To answer the question of what are the sources to our gender identity, I think society has somethink to do with it. In the ____ there were standerds that we imposed on ourselfs and the roles that we play in society. here is the video.

  2. I believe that there used to be more gender roles in the past than today. What I mean by that is that you saw a lot more female nurses back then and females were cooks. But today, we have a lot more male nurses and men do cook in restaurants and at home. In some families now, there is the stay at home husband instead of stay at home wife. Back then, there would only be stay at home wife's. There are now women in the army, and back then, that would never have happened. Why are there all these changes over the years? Maybe they never gave women a chance back then, and they have proved they can do some things that men do.

  3. finishing my reply. In the 1950s there were standers for the family that men and women in America had to follow.

    1. I agree, this video shows a very stereotypical family. You can see the boy being active in sports and the girl staying in the kitchen and doing the dishes. It's hard to imagine that this was the "normal" family back in the early 20th century. Now we have more diverse and complex roles in families. In this modern age the wife could be the one earning money and the dad is staying home making dinner for the kids. We have traveled quite a bit away from the gender norms of the past.
