Mistreating Mental Illness

As we read Cuckoo's Nest, we can see that mental hospitals had very poor standards and practices. The article we read in class also highlights times in our history where "brilliant" doctors and physicians did experiments on the mentally ill. From eating roasted mice to surgical removal of their organs, they tried many methods that the public at the time viewed as innovative. In America today, we have made great advances in treating these people. The only problem now is that people don't jump at the chance of treatment because they are worried what others will think of them. What do you think of the past mistreatment of mental illness? Do you think other developing countries still have this problem?

  1. Back then when they did all these "helpful" treatments, doctors weren't as smart as other doctors are today. I'm not trying to say that they were dumb, but we have so many more advancements in technology that they didn't have back then. In the articles we read in class, they talked about somebody from the 1200s doing a weird method to help the mental patients. But that was over 800 years ago. There has been a huge advancement in technology. It's hard to compare the doctors from a long time ago compared to today’s doctors. I understand why people don't want to be checked out for a mental illness because they are worried of what people think of them. But today, I believe we can help people become less mental but it will take some time before we can completely fix all of the mental patients. But even 50-60 years ago when they took ice picks to the brain, that was uncalled for. How do you expect taking an ice pick and damaging the brain would help a person become normal?

  2. When you said this so called briliant doctors who said they always came up with a new way to cure this people from their mental illness by this new research and break through that will cure them and make them normal people. To me it just sounds like they experiment with them. I still think we have a problem with this because some countries or growing nations i think probably think that this so called treatment still works or if it worked at all believe that is works. Or in they believe that these people are just dumb which to me is just awful and said to think they would treat a human been that way i still can`t believe we did thing that it was helping them.

  3. I do agree that at the time they probably thought is was a good way to get rid of mental illnesses, but I also think they could have used these treatments as forms of torcher too. We say the use of treatment as torcher in the book One flew of the Cuckoo’s Nest. It was when Nurse Ratched was giving shock treatment to Mc Murphy over and over.
